Spanish parliament approves controversial amnesty for Catalan separatists

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez of Spain has proposed an amnesty law as a means to resolve the 2017 Catalonia secession crisis. However, this bill has faced opposition from millions of Spaniards who argue that those responsible for instigating one of Spain's biggest political crises should be charged with crimes such as embezzlement and inciting public disorder. In May 2023, Catalonia will hold an early election to assess the impact of Sánchez's decision to grant amnesty to Carles Puigdemont, a catalan separatist leader and fugitive from Spanish justice, on his Socialist party's standing.
