Souleymane Cissé, Pioneering African Filmmaker, Passes Away at 84

Souleymane Cissé, a renowned figure in African cinema, passed away at the age of 84. The cause of his death is yet to be disclosed. Mariam Cissé, his daughter, confirmed his death at a clinic in Bamako. Cissé was a trailblazing filmmaker who made history by becoming the first black African to win the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival, a feat he achieved in 1987 for his film "Yeelen." His contributions to African cinema were once again recognized in 2023 when he was honored with the Carrosse d'Or at Cannes.
