Night Cycling in China
Security services are cracking down on large-scale night cycling in China as the phenomenon continues to cause traffic chaos
A nighttime bike ride phenomenon has emerged in central China's Henan province, where college students from Zhengzhou travel to Kaifeng, an ancient city. The ride, which originated in June among a handful of female students, quickly gained popularity and by early this month was drawing hundreds of riders nightly. However, by the weekend, the number of riders swelled to tens of thousands, causing traffic congestion and overwhelming the streets with discarded bikes. Authorities have since responded by deploying police and closing bike lanes to curb the craze.
