Saudi Arabia sentences women's rights activist to 11 years in prison

Manahel al-Otaibi, a 29-year-old woman, was arrested in November 2022 for criticizing male guardianship laws on social media. She was subsequently sentenced by a counterterrorism court in January, but the details of her sentence remained undisclosed until Saudi Arabia responded to a request for information about her case at the United Nations. According to reports, Manahel al-Otaibi was jailed for 11 years on charges of "terrorism" related to a Saudi anti-terror law that criminalizes the use of websites to broadcast or publish news, statements, false or malicious rumors. The Saudi government described her offenses as "terrorist acts".
