Sam Nujoma, Namibia's first president, dies aged 95
Sam Nujoma was the first president of Namibia and led the country to independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. He served as president for 15 years until 2005. Nujoma was the leader of the South West Peoples' Organisation (Swapo) and led the fight for independence, which was met with international condemnation and a long period of occupation by South Africa. He is widely regarded as Namibia's founding father, and a period of national mourning was announced following his death.
