Marburg Virus Outbreak
Rwanda to Deploy Experimental Marburg Vaccine Amid Ongoing Outbreak
Rwanda has received 700 doses of a Marburg virus vaccine from the Sabin Vaccine Institute. The vaccine is still under trial. Marburg symptoms include fever, muscle pains, diarrhea, vomiting, and death due to extreme blood loss. There have been at least 46 reported cases in Rwanda, according to the health ministry. The vaccine will be administered to health workers, emergency responders, and individuals who have come into contact with confirmed cases, as there is currently no authorized vaccine or treatment for Marburg. If left untreated, the disease has a fatality rate of up to 88%.
