Niger Political Instability
Russian military presence increases in Niger following end of US agreement
According to various reports, Russian soldiers have recently arrived in Niger as part of a military agreement between the two countries. Niger's state TV announced the arrival, and Russian state media RIA Novosti reported that Russian military instructors will train Nigerien soldiers on using anti-aircraft defense systems. The West African country has been turning to Moscow for support as its relationship with the United States deteriorates. Additionally, the African Corps, which is believed to be the successor of Russia's Wagner mercenary group in Africa, announced the arrival of "the latest military equipment and military instructors from the Russian defense ministry." Russia aims to help Niger install an air defense system to ensure control of its airspace. It should be noted that NATO troops have also been present in Niamey for a transfer flight to Agadez.
