Russian court sentences Oleg Orlov, co-chair of a Nobel-winning rights group, to 30 months in prison
Oleg Orlov, a 70-year-old co-chairman of the Nobel Peace Prize-winning rights group Memorial, has been sentenced to two and a half years in prison by a Russian court. The case against him was accused of being politically motivated, with prosecutors claiming he had discredited the Russian army. Orlov, who has dismissed the charges, winked at his wife Tatyana as the sentence was announced, with around 200 supporters gathered outside the courtroom to bid him farewell. The sentencing comes amidst ongoing backlash against Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny and his supporters. The Nobel Prize-winning Memorial organization has condemned the trial as a "mockery of justice.
