Russian Warships Arrive in Havana for Military Exercise
A fleet of Russian warships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, arrived in Havana harbor on Wednesday, sparking concerns about Russia's intentions. The visit is being seen as a show of force amid rising tensions over the Ukraine war. According to Cuba, the stopover is standard practice by naval vessels from friendly countries and does not pose a threat to the region. However, some experts have expressed skepticism about this claim. The Russian fleet includes a 135-meter frigate named after Admiral Gorshkov, who led the Soviet Union's Red Fleet during World War II. The ship was at the forefront of the flotilla and fired a 21-gun salute upon entering the harbor, which was answered by cannon fire from an 18th-century colonial fort built by the Spanish.
The most obvious alternative, consistent with Venezuelan military's recent moves ... is to fabricate an international crisis that would provide an excuse for 'postponing' Venezuela's election.
The Canadian Armed Forces, alongside its U.S. counterparts, routinely carries out operations (including maritime and air operations) in support of our continental defence mission.
From the very beginning, Havana gave an assessment of what was happening outlining the absolutely correct, true reasons for what was unfolding (in Ukraine), and what was being prepared by the West for many years.
We of course take it seriously, but these exercises don't pose a threat to the United States.
This is not a surprise. We've seen them do these type of port calls before.
While this is likely little more than provocation from Moscow, it sends a message about Russia's ability to project power into the Western Hemisphere with the help of its allies, and it will certainly keep the U.S. military on high alert while they are in theatre.
