Evan Gershkovich Detained in Russia
Russian Court Rejects WSJ Reporter's Detention Appeal
Russian authorities have rejected an appeal by Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich against his detention on espionage charges. The 32-year-old journalist was arrested in March 2023 while on a reporting trip to Moscow and has been held in the notorious Lefortovo prison ever since.
Gershkovich's detention has been extended until at least the end of June, with no trial date yet set. The Kremlin claims he was caught "red-handed" trying to obtain defense secrets for US intelligence, but Gershkovich, his newspaper, and the US government all deny that he is a spy.
