Russia and China veto U.S. resolution calling for immediate ceasefire in Gaza
The United Nations Security Council was unable to pass a resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza due to the vetoes from permanent members Russia and China, as well as Algeria's vote against and Guyana's abstention. The proposed resolution, which received 11 votes in favor, aimed for an "immediate and sustained ceasefire to protect civilians on all sides." Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had stated his country's determination to send troops into Rafah and expressed that there was no way to defeat Hamas. The European Union leaders called for an immediate humanitarian pause in Gaza during a meeting in Brussels, while discussing a proposal to use frozen Russian assets to fund weapons for Ukraine. Russia accused the US of a "hypocritical spectacle" for not putting pressure on Israel and vetoed the resolution along with China. The US had previously vetoed three resolutions demanding a halt to the fighting and was expected to put forward another resolution at the UN Security Council, but it was unclear if there would be a further vote on an alternative resolution.
