Russia accuses Ukraine of attacking Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant

The Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, which is currently under Russian control, has been subjected to multiple drone attacks since November 2022. According to various reports, there have been at least three direct hits against the facility's main reactor containment structures. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and Russian officials have confirmed that there have been no critical damage or casualties, and radiation levels remain normal at the plant. However, Grossi, the director-general of the IAEA, has expressed concern over the safety risks posed by such attacks, stating that they significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident. The Ukrainian military is accused of carrying out these attacks by Russian authorities. In one instance, three staff members were injured, with one in serious condition. The exact weapon used in the attacks is not clear. IAEA experts have confirmed physical impact at unit 6 of the plant, but the damage has not compromised nuclear safety. Ukraine has admitted to striking the dome above a shutdown reactor at the nuclear station. The Ukrainian Armed Forces have also attacked other parts of the Russian-held plant on Sunday. The IAEA has urged all parties to refrain from actions that jeopardize nuclear safety.
