Ruling party candidate strongly opposed by China wins Taiwan presidential election
Lai Ching-te, Taiwan's incumbent vice president, declares victory Saturday night as his two opposition rivals both concede defeat. Lai's running mate, Hsiao Bi-khim, was elected vice president. The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) led the race with 40.25 percent of the vote, according to official results with more than 96 percent of precincts reporting.
