Romania's president resigns amid impeachment threat from hard-right opposition ahead of election re-run

Romania's President Klaus Iohannis resigned on the eve of an impeachment vote, following the annulment of a presidential election due to allegations of Russian meddling. The top court in Romania had cancelled the election in December, citing concerns of Russian interference, after a previously little-known far-right candidate, Calin Georgescu, won the first round. The election was set to be re-held on May 4 and May 18. Iohannis's resignation came after mounting pressure from far-right opposition groups.
