The foreign ministers of the United States, Japan, Australia, and India have expressed "serious concern" over the situation in the South China Sea. This concern was voiced during a joint statement issued after talks between the Quad countries in Tokyo. The Quad countries, have pledged to bolster maritime security in the region.
Uncertainty surrounding the international order as well as the international situation has been increasing with Russia continuing its aggression in Ukraine, attempts to unilaterally change the status quo by force in the East China Sea and South China Sea, and the launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea.
The Secretary made clear that the United States, together with our allies and partners, will advance our vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific.
We are charting a course for a more secure and open Indo-Pacific and Indian Ocean region by bolstering maritime security and domain awareness.
We applaud that and hope and expect to see that it continues going forward.
We are pleased to take note of the successful resupply today of the Second Thomas Shoal, which is the product of an agreement reached between the Philippines and China.
