Qantas Scandal
Qantas to Pay $79 Million Fine Over Canceled Flights Scandal
Qantas, Australia's national carrier, has agreed to settle a lawsuit with the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) over the sale of tickets for flights that had already been canceled. The airline will pay a total of 120 million Australian dollars ($79m), consisting of a fine of 100 million Australian dollars ($66m) and compensation of 20 million Australian dollars ($13m). The ACCC accused Qantas of advertising and selling tickets for over 8,000 canceled flights, misleading consumers who had made travel plans. The airline will provide compensation to more than 86,000 customers affected by the cancellations.
