Putin and Xi announce plans to strengthen military ties in Beijing
Russia's President Vladimir Putin arrived in Beijing for a two-day state visit to China, marking his first trip abroad since re-election. The visit comes amid Russia's growing economic dependence on China due to Western sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine. Putin was greeted by Chinese officials and an honor guard upon arrival, and met with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People. During their meeting, Xi congratulated Putin on his election to a fifth term in office and reiterated that both countries will continue to uphold a position of non-alliance and non-confrontation. The visit is seen as a demonstration of the strong relationship between Russia and China, which has been strengthened by recent tensions with the West.
The Kremlin has continued to rely on foreign components imported via a complicated network of intermediaries. This has proved critical to sustaining the Russian military in Ukraine.
Russian imports of CNC machines — which are used to provide precise parts for various weapons systems from ammunition to aircraft — from Chinese companies also experienced a sharp increase in the months following the Xi-Putin March 2023 meeting.
This is Putin's first trip after his inauguration, and it is therefore intended to show that Sino-Russian relations are moving up another level.
If all of the imports of microelectronics to Russia stop tomorrow, they won't be able to produce the weapons.
I and President Putin agree, we should actively look for convergence points of the interests of both countries, to develop each's advantages, and deepen integration of interests, realizing each others' achievements.
China hopes for the early return of Europe to peace and stability and will continue to play a constructive role toward this.
Our cooperation in world affairs today is one of the main stabilizing factors in the international arena.
Together we are defending the principles of justice and a democratic world order reflecting multipolar realities and based on international law.
We are seeking a comprehensive, sustainable and just settlement of this conflict through peaceful means. We are open to a dialogue on Ukraine, but such negotiations must take into account the interests of all countries involved in the conflict, including ours.
In a famous song of that time, 75 years ago -- it is still performed today -- there is a phrase that has become a catchphrase: 'Russians and Chinese are brothers forever.
Russia and China aren't alone in their efforts to reform an international system and help establish a multipolar global order.
Finding out whether the payments are related to the Russian military-industrial complex... is creating a considerable challenge for Chinese companies and banks.
Never since the fall of the Soviet Union has Russia been so distant from Europe, and never in its entire history has it been so entwined with China.
