Pro-China party wins landslide victory in Maldives elections

In the recent Maldives election, the pro-China ruling party, People's National Congress (PNC), led by President Mohamed Muizzu, won a landslide victory. According to the Elections Commission of Maldives, PNC and its allies secured 70 out of the first 93 seats declared. This is a significant increase from their previous eight seats in the outgoing parliament. The main opposition party, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), had previously held a super-majority. The election results are being viewed as a crucial test for Muizzu's plan to strengthen economic cooperation with China. India, a traditional ally of the Maldives, is expected to be affected by this shift as Muizzu's government moves away from its "India First" policy.
