This difficult period was primarily due to the cancer diagnoses and subsequent treatments of his wife, the Princess of Wales, and his father, the King. William particularly emphasized the emotional toll of watching his wife go through chemotherapy, stating that this experience was worse for him than the loss of his mother at the age of 15.
