2024 Portugal Elections

Portugal's centre-right wins election, no majority without far right

The election took place against a backdrop of corruption scandals and economic hardship that have eroded faith in mainstream parties. The center-left Socialist Party and the center-right Social Democratic Party formed a coalition called Democratic Alliance, but the AD has ruled out any deal with Chega, which could lead to an unstable government. The AD is expected to win 83 to 91 seats in the 230-seat parliament, while Chega is on track to win 40 to 46 seats, up from just 12 in the previous election. The AD campaigned on promises to boost economic growth by cutting taxes and tackling corruption, which have been major issues dominating the campaign along with the housing crisis and low wages. The general election set a high turnout of almost 65%, up sharply from 51.5% in the previous election. It is important to note that there are differences in the reported vote percentages for some parties across different sources.
