Portugal declares state of calamity as wildfires continue to burn out of control across the country
Wildfires in Portugal have resulted in at least seven fatalities, with multiple fires still active and out of control. The blazes have destroyed over 72,000 hectares of forest since Sunday, with the situation expected to worsen. In the Aveiro and Viseu areas, dozens of houses have been destroyed and significant areas of forest and scrubland have been consumed by fire. The local authority has criticized the emergency response as inadequate, citing the destruction of at least eight kilometers of walkways.
