Akebono Taro, born Chad Rowan in Hawaii, made history in 1993 by becoming the first foreign-born wrestler to achieve Japan's highest title in sumo, that of yokozuna or grand champion. Throughout his career, Akebono won a total of 11 major sumo tournaments, which are held six times a year.
