Pakistan's former premier Sharif and allies agree to form a coalition
The 2023 Pakistan elections have resulted in a hung parliament with no single party winning a clear majority. The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) have announced their intention to form a coalition government, despite independent candidates backed by Imran Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party gaining the most seats with 93 out of 264 parliamentary seats declared. Imran Khan himself had expressed his desire for a government led by his party. However, the establishment's response to this unprecedented political outcome remains uncertain, with some speculating that there may be further crackdowns on Khan and his allies. The announcement of a coalition government between PML-N and PPP was made after several days of negotiations following the elections, which saw monetary services suspended across the country in an effort to keep voter turnout low while Imran Khan was behind bars.
