Orca Lagoon Rescue
Orca Calf Rescued and Released Back into Open Water in Canada
A 14-year-old female orca, known as Kwikwasut'inux (Brave Little Hunter), became stranded with her pregnant mother in a remote B.C. lagoon in late March. The mother died on March 23rd, leaving the calf trapped. Despite efforts to free the whale, it remained stuck until April 26th when a small group of rescuers witnessed Kwikwasut'inux swimming under the bridge. Another article reports that members of the Ehattesaht First Nation used seal meat to guide the two-year-old orca calf towards freedom after she was stranded for weeks.
