Oppenheimer premieres in Japan despite nuclear theme concerns

The film "Oppenheimer," a biopic about American physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, was initially released in the United States and other countries in July 2023. However, it was noticeably absent from cinemas in Japan for several months due to controversy and sensitivities surrounding the anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. The film drew criticism last year for not depicting the actual use of the atomic bombs or the suffering they caused. Despite grossing $953 million worldwide, Universal Pictures did not include Japan in its release schedule. On March 29, 2024, "Oppenheimer" was finally screened in Japanese cinemas. Approximately 214,000 people died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki when the United States dropped atomic bombs on these cities.
