Ontario Leader Threatens to Halt Energy Exports to US Amid Trump Tariff Tensions
ai generated text
Doug Ford has made several statements indicating his willingness to take a tough stance against the US. He has threatened to stop providing electricity to the US, specifically targeting 1.5 million homes in New York, Michigan, and Minnesota. However, not all premiers are supporting Ford's stance, with several stating they will not follow suit. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is actively working to address the situation, meeting with provincial premiers to discuss the tariffs. Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland emphasizes the importance of maintaining a positive relationship with the US.
Let me be clear, from the Alberta perspective, under no circumstances will Alberta agree to cut off oil and gas exports.
I won't threaten Donald not to send electricity.
This is an important moment for the whole country, and I don't think Canadians would be very forgiving if their politicians weren't trying to work on the national interest together.
One should be careful not to confuse the odd public comment, with what is a clear desire to work together with the Government of Canada.
For a Canadian response to be strong and effective, Canada needs to be united, and that's why we need to have good ongoing conversations with the premiers of provinces and territories.
The Prime Minister has been clear that in the event that the United States were to impose unjustified tariffs on Canada, of course we would respond.
A number of premiers offered strong support for a robust Canadian response, including some who proactively named critical minerals and metals produced in their provinces and exported to the United States.
Every Congress person I speak to, every Governor or Senator, I am not hearing the same thing as what I am hearing from the president (elect).
We can't sit back and roll over. We just won't as a country. And isn't this a shame, our closest friends and allies.
My comment to the two governors yesterday, we want to sell you more energy. We want to make sure that we sign this deal.
We're sending a message to the US … you come and attack Ontario, you attack the livelihoods of people in Ontario and Canadians, we are going to use every tool in our toolbox to defend Ontarians and Canadians. Let's hope it never comes to that.
Alberta has a surplus of what $130 billion and oil and gas, God bless them. But I am talking about the electricity that powers 1.5 million homes and keeps companies and business open.... I have been very clear on that.
But we will go to the full extent, depending how far this goes, we will go to the extent of cutting off their energy, going down to Michigan, going down to New York state and over to Wisconsin.
That's OK if [Ford] does that, that's fine.
The United States is subsidizing Canada, it's truly a subsidy and we shouldn't have to do that.
