Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi moved to house arrest
Aung San Suu Kyi, the 78-year-old Nobel laureate and former leader of Myanmar, has been moved from prison to house arrest along with former President U Win Myint, 72. The move was reportedly made due to extreme heat, affecting elderly and infirm prisoners. Suu Kyi has been in detention since the military seized power in a coup in February 2021 and is currently serving a 27-year sentence for various criminal convictions. Previously, she spent 15 years under house arrest at her family residence on Yangon's Inya Lake.
Major General Zaw Min Tun confirmed that approximately 3,000 prisoners were transferred from prison due to the heatwave.
