Myanmar Junta
Myanmar junta enforces compulsory military service law
Myanmar's military government has activated the 2010 People's Military Service Law, making it mandatory for young men and women between the ages of 18 and 45 (males) and 18 and 35 (females) to serve in the armed forces for a minimum of two years. This law had previously been enacted but never enforced until now. The military came to power in 2021 after ousting the elected civilian government led by Aung San Suu Kyi. There are conflicting reports regarding the potential extension of military service beyond two years, with some sources stating it could be up to five years during the ongoing state of emergency. Myanmar has been experiencing chaos since the military takeover in 2021.
