Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for the "discovery and synthesis of quantum dots"

Trio wins Nobel Prize in chemistry for quantum dots, tiny particles that power TVs and phones. Quantum dots are particles just a few atoms in diameter that can release very bright coloured light. Moungi Bawendi, Louis Brus and Alexei Ekimov laid the groundwork for many technologies in use today.
