More than 200 dead in Nepal floods as parts of Kathmandu remain under water
At least 193 people have been confirmed dead in Nepal due to devastating floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains. The Bagmati River and its tributaries burst their banks, causing widespread destruction and displacement. The southern part of Kathmandu was severely affected, with swaths of the city left underwater. The search for the missing continues, with 31 people still reported missing. The floods have destroyed hundreds of homes, cut off highways, and downed power lines, causing significant disruption to daily life. The government has closed schools and colleges for three days in response to the disaster. The heavy rains, which were the heaviest in two decades, caused major rivers to swell far above danger levels, leading to the catastrophic consequences.
During the visit of the then Nepal PM in September 2014, Modi had discussions with him on the Bihar flood problem, and in October 2023, a team of experts had visited the country. It held discussions on construction of Saptkosi high dam, Sunkosi diversion barrage and the flood caused by river Kamla.
Both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah have been working with active cooperation of CM Nitish Kumar.
Police are working with other agencies and locals to rescue and find the missing people.
There may be some isolated showers, but heavy rains are unlikely.
I've never before seen flooding on this scale in Kathmandu.
We have urged the concerned authorities to close schools in the affected areas for three days.
We have around eight locations, all of them have been blocked due to landslides in different sections of the road.
The search for the missing is still underway while the affected families are being brought to safety.
We jumped from one roof to another to safety and finally they came with boats to rescue us.
