Millions in Myanmar face economic "free fall" due to civil war, UN finds
According to multiple reports from the United Nations, the economic situation in Myanmar has significantly worsened over the past few years, leading to a dramatic shrinking of the middle class and a widespread increase in poverty. Approximately 49.7% of Myanmar's population, which is around 26.5 million people, live below the poverty line. This figure represents nearly double the number from 2017. The exact poverty line varies, with some reports stating that people live on less than 76 US cents a day, while others report that the figure is 1,590 kyats a day. Regardless, it is clear that the economic situation in Myanmar has deteriorated rapidly since the military seized power in a coup three years ago. The UN also notes that the situation is likely to have worsened further by the time of their report's release.
