The path of totality stretched from Mazatlan to Newfoundland, with most of North America experiencing a partial eclipse. The last viewers were located along the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland at 5:16 p.m. local time. The eclipse was significant as it was the continent's biggest audience ever, with over 32 million Americans living in its path. Festivals, viewing parties, and even mass weddings were planned along the "path of totality." Historically, solar eclipses have had profound reactions across different faiths, with some Christian circles comparing the darkness during Jesus' crucifixion to a solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse that can be seen from a large part of North America will not occur until 2044.
