Mexico and Spain's diplomatic relations strained after new president excludes king from inauguration
Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico's president-elect, has declined to invite King Felipe VI of Spain to her inauguration, citing the king's failure to respond to demands to atone for atrocities committed during the Spanish conquest of the Aztec empire 500 years ago. This decision is reportedly linked to a 2019 letter sent by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador to King Felipe and Pope Francis, in which he requested an apology for the historical events. King Felipe's government refused to apologize at the time, stating that they "profoundly rejected" the letter and its content. Sheinbaum has stated that she spoke with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez by phone to discuss the matter, but ultimately decided not to invite the king to her inauguration.
Let's not forget that this head of state has taken part in all the swearings-in – all of them – as a prince and then as a king and a head of state. That's why we can't accept his exclusion and that's why we've told the Mexican government that there will be no Spanish diplomatic representation whatsoever.
Spain and Mexico are brother countries – and that's why the exclusion of our head of state seems unacceptable.
Mexico and Spain share a solid relationship of friendship.
Unfortunately, this letter [sent by López Obrador] did not merit any direct response, as would have corresponded to the best diplomatic practice.
Instead, part of the letter was leaked to the media and the Spanish foreign ministry then released a press statement. The Mexican government has not received a direct clarification nor answer regarding this matter.
I trust that this circumstance, which today highlights our diversity of opinions, will also be the starting point for Mexico and Spain to soon find new ways of understanding based on our sovereignty and mutual respect.
That the Kingdom of Spain express in a public and official manner the recognition of the grievances caused.
What does it cost them to offer an apology?
We are talking about differences with the Spanish monarchy, which was respectfully asked to offer an apology to the native peoples of Mexico for the atrocities committed.
They acted with a lot of arrogance, they never answered a respectful and formal letter.
It is a blessing that the people of Mexico have decided, through a democratic process and as never before, that we have a president like Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, it is the best thing that could have happened to us.
