Ecuador-Mexico Relations
Mexico and Ecuador suspend diplomatic ties after embassy raid, former VP arrested
There have been tensions between Ecuador and Mexico following Ecuador's decision to storm the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas, who had sought political asylum there. Glas was once a powerful politician in Ecuador and was considered a potential candidate for the Citizen's Revolution in the 2023 presidential elections. However, he was convicted of corruption and had been holed up in the embassy since December 2022 to avoid arrest.
Mexico has responded by suspending diplomatic ties with Ecuador and declaring the Mexican ambassador persona non grata. Mexico's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, has called the arrest attempt an "authoritarian act."
