Meta imposes global ban on Russian state media outlets over allegations of foreign interference activity
Meta, the owner of Facebook and Instagram, has announced a global ban on several Russian state media outlets, including RT, Rossiya Segodnya, and other related entities. The ban is in response to allegations that these outlets have been involved in disinformation operations and have used deceptive tactics to carry out influence campaigns. The US has accused RT and its employees of funneling $10 million through shell entities to covertly fund these campaigns. RT has been forced to cease formal operations in several countries, including the UK, Canada, the EU, and the US, due to sanctions. The ban is expected to come into effect in the next few days and will apply to all of Meta's apps, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads. The move marks a significant escalation in actions against Russian state media actors and is seen as a response to the growing concerns about foreign interference on social media platforms.
RT is aware of and prepared to assist Russia's plans to incite protests should the election not result in a Russia-preferred candidate winning the presidency.
Today, we're exposing how Russia deploys similar tactics around the world.
Russian weaponization of disinformation to subvert and polarize free and open societies extends to every part of the world.
After careful consideration, we expanded our ongoing enforcement against Russian state media outlets: Rossiya Segodnya, RT and other related entities are now banned from our apps globally for foreign interference activity.
