Mars study suggests ocean of water lies beneath the planet's surface
New research suggests that Mars may be hiding a global ocean beneath its surface, with enough water trapped in underground rocks to cover the entire planet. This finding is based on seismic measurements from NASA's Mars InSight lander, which detected over 1,300 marsquakes before shutting down two years ago. The water is believed to have seeped from the surface billions of years ago, when Mars had rivers, lakes, and possibly oceans. However, it's unclear whether this water still holds life, as scientist notes that the presence of water does not necessarily mean the presence of life. The analysis of seismic readings suggests that much of the liquid water did not escape into space when Mars lost its atmosphere, and could be trapped to cover all of Mars.
