Man who attacked police at the US Capitol gets 20 years in prison for one of longest January 6 sentences

David Nicholas Dempsey, a 37-year-old man from Santa Ana, California, was involved in the January 6, 2021, riot at the US Capitol. Prosecutors described him as one of the most violent members of the mob of Donald Trump supporters. Dempsey's actions included stomping on police officers' heads, swinging poles at officers, striking an officer in the head with a metal crutch, and attacking police with pepper spray and broken furniture. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, which is the second longest sentence for any of the nearly 1,500 people charged for their roles in the attack on Congress.
