Maldives-China Military Agreement
Maldives signs defense agreement with China, obtaining non-lethal weapons and training
The Maldives Defense Ministry announced on Monday that an agreement had been signed with China to strengthen bilateral ties through military cooperation. This marks the first time the Maldives has entered into such an agreement with China. The deal was made during a meeting between President Mohamed Muizzu, Major General Zhang Baoqun, and President of the Export-Import Bank of China, Ren Shengjun. India is currently in the process of withdrawing its military personnel from the Maldives, with the first batch set to leave on Sunday. This withdrawal is a result of an election promise made by Muizzu and must be completed by May. The removal of Indian troops presents an opportunity for China to increase its influence in the region.
