Macron Names New Right-Leaning Government Under PM Barnier
French President Emmanuel Macron has formed a new government, led by Prime Minister Michel Barnier, after months of political uncertainty following the snap general election in July. The 38-39 member cabinet includes ministers from Macron's centrist alliance and the conservative Republicans, marking a shift to the right despite the left-wing coalition securing the most seats in the election. The new government's first task will be to submit a 2025 budget plan to address France's financial situation, including a ballooning budget deficit. Jean-Noel Barrot, a centrist politician from MoDem, has been appointed as the new foreign minister, known for his work in digital transformation and European affairs. The European Union has put France on notice over its spiraling debt, and the new government will need to address this issue to avoid further economic instability.
This is not a new government, it's a reshuffle.
I'm angry to see a government that looks set to recycle all the election losers.
I am discovering that the country's budgetary situation is very serious.
The fact that we didn't put forward a prior vote of censure does not deprive us of the possibility.
The centrist government is de facto a minority administration.
For now, I suspect they'll let the government run.
It can be brought down at any moment depending on the winds of Marine Le Pen.
Macron's influence will certainly still be felt across this government.
I am worried and I'm angry. What is the point of having an election at all?
I am here because this outcome does not correspond to how people voted.
