A series of articles has reported on a devastating wildfire in the Los Angeles area. The fire, known as the Pacific Palisades fire, has burned 15,832 acres and is considered the most destructive in LA history. At least five people have died and many more have been injured. The fire has also forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes.
We remain in communication with FEMA and ready to support our neighbours if needed.
This morning, we woke up to a dark cloud over all of Los Angeles. But it is darkest for those who are most intimately impacted by these fires. It has been an immensely painful 24 hours.
This will likely be the most destructive windstorm seen (since a) 2011 windstorm that did extensive damage to Pasadena and nearby foothills of the San Gabriel Valley.
Extreme fire behaviour, including short and long-range spotting, continues to challenge firefighting efforts for the Palisades Fire.
They say it was an incredibly tough firefight with unrelenting winds.
After returning this evening from Los Angeles, where earlier today he had met with police, fire and emergency personnel … President Biden made the decision to cancel his upcoming trip to Italy to remain focused on directing the full federal response in the days ahead.
We're doing anything and everything, and as long as it takes to contain these fires.
There is in case you haven't noticed, there is global warming.
This time of year traditionally has not been fire season, but now we disabuse any notion that there is a season.
A thousand structures already that have been destroyed; a hundred-plus thousand people that have been evacuated; lives lost; traditions, lifestyles, places torn asunder.
People are literally fleeing. People have lost their lives. Kids lost their schools. Families completely torn asunder. Churches burned down, and this guy wants to politicize it.
People are literally fleeing... This guy wanted to politicize it. I have a lot of thoughts and I know what I want to say. I won't.
I'm sad to report we made two arrests this morning for looting.
It's always sad when I have to say this, but part of our responsibility is to make sure no one loots or steals from our residents or our community members who are already being impacted.
Remember, this is still a very fluid situation, there's zero containment on this fire. I'm really praying we don't find more, but I don't think that's going to be the case.
We have a number of hospitals threatened, and if they have to be evacuated, it could become a crisis.
