Ecuador-Mexico Relations

Latin American States Express Solidarity with Mexico over Embassy Raid by Ecuador

The MIKTA (Mexico, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Türkiye, and Australia) group of foreign ministers have expressed their deepest concern over the recent violence and diplomatic crisis between Mexico and Ecuador. On April 5, a group of 12 heavily armed agents stormed the Mexican Embassy in Quito, forcibly removing former Vice President Jorge Glas. This incident has led to a severe crisis with uncertain repercussions, prompting Mexico to file a complaint against Ecuador at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague. Mexico's President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who typically avoids international politics, has recently taken stances on regional issues. One such stance includes supporting disgraced former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo. In response to the crisis, Honduras has recalled its charge d'affaires from Ecuador for consultation, and Venezuela plans to close its diplomatic offices in protest. These announcements were made during a virtual summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC).
