Kenyan Parliament Removes Deputy President From Office in Historic Impeachment Trial

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua of Kenya has been impeached by the Senate on five of eleven charges. The vote exceeded the required two-thirds majority, with 54 senators voting in favor on the first count and a total of 282 votes in the National Assembly last week. This is the first time a deputy president has been removed from office under the 2010 constitution. Gachagua failed to testify in his defense, citing chest pains and a request to postpone his appearance, leading his defense team to leave the chamber. His downfall is reportedly a result of a bitter falling out with President Ruto.
