New Tory leader Kemi Badenoch
Kemi Badenoch elected leader of UK Conservative Party
Kemi Badenoch is the new leader of the UK's Conservative Party, the first black woman to hold the position. She won a vote of almost 100,000 party members, defeating Robert Jenrick. Badenoch was born Olukemi Adegoke in Nigeria in 1980 and moved to the UK at the age of 16. She promises to return the party to its founding principles, saying "the time has come to tell the truth."
Badenoch's victory follows the party's crushing defeat in July's general election, which led to the resignation of former leader Rishi Sunak. As the new leader, Badenoch will be opposition leader. She has said that the economic and social upheavals in Nigeria shaped her political outlook and has cited Margaret Thatcher as her political heroine.
