Japanese Military Helicopters Crash, One Dead, Seven Missing
Seven crew members are reported missing, while one has been rescued and unfortunately, later died. The incident occurred near Torishima island, approximately 600 kilometres south of Tokyo. Rescuers have recovered a flight data recorder and a blade from each helicopter.
According to multiple reports from Japan's Self-Defense Force, two helicopters collided with each other and both crashed into the water late on Saturday. One person was recovered and later confirmed dead. The cause of the collision is not yet known, but officials believe it is "highly likely" that the helicopters collided before crashing. Rescuers have recovered a flight data recorder and blades from each helicopter to aid in the investigation. Defense Minister Minoru Kihara stated that potential remnants of the aircraft were identified in the sea, further indicating a probable collision.
