Italy expands migrant facilities in Albania under contentious agreement between Italian and Albanian authorities

Italy has established two migrant processing centers in Albania, which will accommodate up to 3,000 men per month while their asylum requests are processed in Italy. The centers are operational, according to Italy's ambassador to Albania, and migrants will be transferred to a second, larger center in Gjader. This move is part of Italy's plan to combat human trafficking and only allow those with a genuine right to enter the EU to enter. However, the European Court of Justice has ruled that Italy's plan to offshore migrants from countries deemed "safe" by Italy but not by the EU is not legal. Despite this ruling, Italy and Albania are moving forward with the plan, as there is no prohibition against it.
