Italian journalist Cecilia Sala detained in Iran amid rising tensions over her reporting in the country

Cecilia Sala, a 29-year-old war correspondent and reporter, was taken into custody on December 19 while reporting in Tehran, Iran. Italy's foreign ministry is working with Iranian authorities to clarify her legal situation. Sala, who works for Il Foglio newspaper and podcast company Chora Media, has been under arrest in Iran for over a week and is being held in Tehran's notorious Evin prison. She has reportedly been visited by Italian Ambassador Paola Amadei. Sala's parents have stated that she told them she was unharmed. Her detention was only made public on Friday, December 26.
