Israeli military "surrounds" Khan Younis after 24 soldiers killed in Gaza

The military says its ground forces have "encircled" Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip. 24 of its soldiers were killed in the enclave, the largest single-day toll in the three-month war. "Ground forces engaged in close-quarter combat and directed [air] strikes," it said. The Israeli military describes the area as a "significant stronghold" of Hamas.
