Israeli airstrikes in Gaza kill at least 34 people, including six UN staff members

An Israeli airstrike hit the UN-operated al-Jaouni Preparatory Boys School in Nuseirat, central Gaza Strip, killing at least 14 people and wounding 18 others. The school, which has been hit five times since the war began, was sheltering approximately 12,000 displaced Palestinians. The Israeli military claimed the strike was a "precise" attack on Hamas militants, while UN Secretary General António Guterres condemned the attack, calling it "totally unacceptable." The strike was the deadliest single incident for UNRWA staff, with six UN employees among the dead. The incident marked the 11th month of the Gaza war, which has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties.
We call on all parties to the conflict to never use schools or the areas around them for military or fighting purposes.
Among those killed was the manager of the UNRWA shelter and other team members providing assistance to displaced people.
This school has been hit five times since the war began. It is home to around 12,000 displaced people, mainly women and children.
These dramatic violations of international humanitarian law need to stop now.
This is a further example of the Hamas terrorist organisation's systematic abuse of civilian infrastructure in violation of international law.
Numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence.
The longer impunity prevails, the more international humanitarian law & the Geneva conventions will become irrelevant.
Humanitarian staff, premises and operations have been blatantly and unabatedly disregarded since the beginning of the war.
Six of our @UNRWA colleagues are among those killed.
