Israeli Forces Raid Al Jazeera Office in West Bank, Order 45-Day Closure
Israeli forces raided the offices of Al Jazeera in Ramallah, West Bank, on September 22, ordering the bureau to be shut down for 45 days. The closure order, delivered by a heavily armed and masked soldier, accused the network of "incitement to and support of terrorism." This move follows an earlier order in May that saw Israeli police seize equipment and block Al Jazeera's broadcasts in Israel and websites. The raid marked the first time Israel has shut down a foreign news outlet operating in the country. Al Jazeera's West Bank bureau chief, Walid al-Omari, read the closure order live on air, calling the targeting of journalists an attempt to "erase the truth." The Israeli government has also revoked the press credentials of Al Jazeera journalists in the country.
We will continue to fight the enemy channels and ensure the safety of our heroic fighters.
This is the real face of Israel, a country that claims to be a democracy and claims to be supporting freedom of press.
Israel's ongoing suppression of the free press, seen as an effort to conceal its actions in the Gaza Strip, stands in contravention of international and humanitarian law.
Israel's direct targeting and killing of journalists, arrests, intimidation and threats will not deter Al Jazeera from its commitment to cover.
This arbitrary military decision is a new aggression against journalistic work and media outlets.
This is very much in line with the policy of the state of Israel since 1948 … to prevent real news about Palestinians or about what the state of Israel is doing to Palestinians … colonising them and arresting them and torturing them.
We've heard Israeli officials threatening to close down the bureau. We've heard the government discussing this, asking the military ruler in the occupied West Bank to close down and shut down the channel. But we [had] not been expecting it to happen today.
