Israel confirms deaths of six hostages after IDF finds bodies in Gaza
The Israeli military has confirmed the recovery of the bodies of six hostages taken by Hamas during the October 7 attack. The hostages, including an Israeli-American, were among the over 200 people taken by the militants into Gaza. The bodies were found in an underground tunnel in the Gaza Strip, specifically in the city of Rafah. The hostages were identified as Carmel Gat, Eden Yerushalmi, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, Alexander Lobanov, Almog Sarusi, and Master Sgt Ori Danino. According to the Israeli military, the hostages were killed by their captors shortly before their bodies were found. The news has sparked calls for a mass protest from a hostage family organization and has been met with condemnation from US President Joe Biden, who described the situation as "devastating and outrageous".
These young innocent men and women should have long been brought to safety and to their loved ones.
There is still a very significant risk of escalation at the regional level. We are still very much in a very, very dangerous type of situation.
My thoughts are with their loved ones at this awful time.
They were cruelly murdered shortly before we were to rescue them.
According to our initial estimation, they were brutally murdered by Hamas terrorists a short time before we reached them.
They were held hostage by Hamas and murdered in cold blood.
We will continue to fight relentlessly against the criminal, terrorist organization Hamas, which has once again proven there is no end to its willingness to commit murder and crimes against humanity.
The heart of an entire nation is shattered to pieces. I embrace their families with all my heart, and apologise for failing to bring them home safely.
The blood of our brothers cries out to us.
They have been relentless and irrepressible champions of their son and of all the hostages held in unconscionable conditions. I admire them and grieve with them more deeply than words can express.
Earlier today, in a tunnel under the city of Rafah, Israeli forces recovered six bodies of hostages held by Hamas.
We think we can close the deal, they've all said they agree on the principles.
I have gotten to know his parents, Jon and Rachel. They have been courageous, wise, and steadfast, even as they have endured the unimaginable.
The delay in signing the deal has led to their deaths and those of many other hostages.
